Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need to do the reporting myself? I'm usually very busy during flu season.
A: No, you do not need to do the reporting yourself. As a provider, you need to diagnose the
person as having ILI, but the actual faxing or electronic entry of records can be done by
anyone you designate in the office.
Q: Can only Physicians participate?
A: No, other providers such as Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Student Health
Nurses can be sentinel providers.
Please note: that this network of providers is different from the
network of clinical laboratories that we use in Maryland for flu
surveillance. The clinical laboratories report data to the State while
providers report data directly to CDC.
