School Based Services
The School-Based Occupational Therapy (OT) and Physical Therapy (PT) Program helps students in Frederick County Public Schools by supporting their ability to learn, move, and take part in school activities.
For a student to receive school OT or PT, the student must first qualify for an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and the area of academic concern must require the special skills of an OT or PT. The type of support each student receives depends on the student’s needs.
OT and PT Services May Include:
- Helping school staff learn strategies, tools, and equipment to support students
- Suggesting changes or supports for students with 504 Plans so they can fully take part in school
- Providing consultation and direct services for students ages 3–21 who qualify through an IEP
What Are OT and PT Services?
Occupational Therapy (OT) and Physical Therapy (PT) are called related services under a federal law called the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This means OT and PT help students with disabilities take part in their special education program in the least restrictive learning environment.
Types of OT and PT Support:
Consultative Services:
- The OT or PT works with teachers, staff, and families to support the student throughout their school day.
- This may include observing the student, providing recommendations, coaching staff, and supporting training.
- These services are written into the student’s IEP when needed.
Direct Services:
- The OT or PT works directly with the student to address specific student IEP goals.
- The amount of service time depends on how many goals the student has and how complex they are.
- These services require the specialized skills of an OT or PT.
What OT and PT Services Are Not:
- School OT and PT services do not replace medical therapy.
- A medical diagnosis or delay in motor skills does not automatically mean a student will receive OT or PT at school.
